Tuesday, December 13, 2011 by

outback bowlHey everyone.  Travis back with great gridiron things to do in Tampa Bay.  One of my favorite events of the year is the Outback Bowl!  Although our hometown USF Bulls can't play (it's a matchup between the SEC and Big Ten Conferences), we still have some of the country's best teams face off in Tampa Bay!

This year, the Michigan State Spartans and Georgia Bulldogs will square-off in the Outback Bowl on January 2 in Tampa. That's right, the game is Jan. 2 this year!  It is a match-up of two 10-win Division Champions from two of the most prestigious conferences in college football. The Spartans are ranked 12th in the AP Poll while the Bulldogs are ranked 18th. It's hard to believe that we have two top 20 teams coming to Tampa Bay!

If you've ever been to an Outback Bowl in Tampa Bay, you know there are a lot of events to participate in surrounding the game, including parades, beach days, and much, much more.  You can find all of those events and information at www.OutbackBowl.com.  But we'll also be back with more updates about what's happening surrounding the game.

But remember, the Outback Bowl will be played on January 2, kickoff at 1PM, at Raymond James Stadium. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster..just call (813) 287-8844 or 1-800-745-3000, or head over to www.ticketmaster.com. Be The Thunder This Thursday and All Season!

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 by
Hello Tampa! Lisa here, with an update on your Tampa Bay Lightning! BeTheThunder

October has long been my favorite month. You have College Football, NFL, all things pumpkin flavored, cooler temperatures (if we are lucky), and hockey. Each year I forget how much I truly love October until the start of the NHL season. And this year has been no exception.

Hockey season started full strength almost two weeks ago, but it was not until last night that our Lightning were at home for the first time. It was great to see the hustle and bustle of all the Bolts fans walking to the game last night after work. I swear almost everyone had a jersey on.

This season is sure to be full of hat tricks, high-sticking, and hooking but that's not why we love our Lightning. The Lightning showed us their potential last year, and I know they have that same potential this year. Add to that a newly renovated arena with a new logo and you have a recipe for another great season.

Coming up, our Lightning will take on the New York Islanders Thursday night, and the Buffalo Sabre's on Saturday night before going out of town for a couple of games. The Bolts end the month playing the newest NHL team the Winnipeg Jets.

If I were you, I would go online and check out the 10 and 21 game deals the Lightning offer, and secure your spot in this years drive to the playoffs.

That's all for now, but check in later for more Tampa Florida News, and other things to do in Tampa Bay! And remember, BE THE THUNDER.

Red Bull FlugTag Returns to Tampa Tomorrow at the Tampa Convention Center!

Friday, October 7, 2011 by
Red Bull
Hey there sports fans! Three years ago, Red Bull FlugTag first touched down in Tampa and set a FlugTag attendance record for U.S. events when 110,000 people crowded around the Tampa Convention Center waterfront. We have the opportunity to beat that record tomorrow, when FlugTag returns to the Tampa Convention Center. This will be FlugTag’s only U.S. event in 2011.

FlugTag, German for “flying day” is an event where participants design and build a flying device and compete to see whose can fly the farthest. Red Bull has hosted more than 90 FlugTag events worldwide since 1991. The 38 teams will try to exceed the world record, 207 feet, set in St. Paul, Minn. last year. Judges will rate the teams based on their pre-flight skit, creativity and the length of their flight. One of the judges this year is former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and current Tampa philanthropist, Ryan Nece.

For those planning to attend on Saturday (admission is free!), FlugTag opens at 11 a.m. and the opening ceremonies begin at 12:30 p.m. However, plan for ample travel time, due to the Platt Street Bridge closure, the 17th annual Tampa Police Memorial Run occurring on Bayshore Boulevard tomorrow morning and of course, the increased traffic for FlugTag. Officials recommend that people park in the city’s downtown garages or in Ybor City and take public transit into downtown.

For more information, visit www.redbullflugtagusa.com/Tampa2011.  That's it for now, but stay tuned in for more Tampa Bay sports news and updates!

Jett supplied theme songs for the ESPN X-Games premiere and has contributed music to all of their games since.

Adding to Jett’s list of accomplishments is Blackheart Records, an independent label she founded with long time songwriting partner and producer Kenny Laguna, in 1980 - which made her the first female artist to own and operate an independent record company.

History Center Exhibit Draws on Area’s Sports History

Thursday, June 2, 2011 by

history centerHey everyone - Travis back with some more great things to do in Tampa Bay...and this time we're heading over to our very own Tampa Bay History Center.  The NFL’s Vince Lombardi Trophy, MLB’s American League Championship Trophy, and a replica of the NHL’s Stanley Cup will be on display to the public during a new exhibit opening Father’s Day weekend at the Tampa Bay History Center.

This means you can bring dad to the Tampa Bay History Center and experience 70 years of competitive play during Sports in Tampa Bay: Through the Eyes of Lamar Sparkman. All dads will receive free admission on both Saturday and Sunday, courtesy of Verizon.

Sports in Tampa Bay recounts teams and players from Tampa’s past, highlighting spring training stars, Super Bowl champions and college stand-outs. Tampa Bay’s modern sports franchises are also celebrated, with memorabilia from the Tampa Bay Rays, Lightning and Buccaneers, as well as personal items from some of Tampa’s home-grown sports heroes.

In addition to the Buc’s Vince Lombardi trophy and the Rays’ ALCS trophy, the exhibit will include Lou Piniella’s World Series trophy, Tino Martinez’s Silver Slugger award, and line up-cards from the Rays’ 2008 World Series run.

Perhaps best known as the creator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ original swashbuckling logo, which fans labeled “Bucco Bruce,” Lamar Sparkman’s drawings of professional and amateur athletes span more than 40 years. In 2010, the Sparkman family donated more than 200 original drawings by the late cartoonist to the Tampa Bay History Center. Those drawings, along with objects from Tampa’s professional, collegiate and amateur teams, tell the story of Sports in Tampa Bay: Through the Eyes of Lamar Sparkman.

Progress Village sports complex Temporarily closed

Monday, April 4, 2011 by

sportsHey everyone.  Travis back with an update that everyone needs to know about.  We recently told you about the grand opening of the Progress Village sports complex.  Unfortunately, with the storms last week, it has been temporarily closed.  Here are the details -

Damage from the storm system that came through the Tampa Bay area last week has resulted in the closing of the Larry Sanders Progress Village Sports Complex until further notice.

According to Kemly Green, community relations coordinator for the Hillsborough County Communications Department, contractors are on-site at the sports complex and presently straightening lighting poles, repairing electrical lines and re-planting trees.

General cleanup — including trash, damage to large trees and straightening of football posts — will be handled by staff from the county's Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department.

The Larry Sanders sports complex had its grand opening on March 5 and is the home of the Progress Village Little League and the Progress Village Panthers youth football team.  Green said the park is currently closed, but should be ready for use sometime this week.

So, stay tuned!  And as always, keep checking back here for more updates, as well as info on great things to do in Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay area events.

MOSI is Hosting a Brain Bowl

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 by
Brain Bowl at MOSITampa, Lisa here with a fun event at MOSI.

The Brain Bowl is coming March 17th. And no it does not involve playing football with a brain, or literally bowling and using a brain as the ball. It involves using the knowledge inside your brain to compete for prizes!

The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is partnering with the Hillsborough County Public School students to put their science wiz skills to the test.

As many as 400 students will participate in science trivia and experiments, including a "Quiz Bowl," trebuchet contest (you know that old time-y looking thing that launches stuff super far), mousetrap car competition, chemical equation balancing competition, demo contest and a poster contest.

To participate students must qualify at the schools to make it to the final Brain Bowl at MOSI. The actual event will take place March 17, 2011 from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Sounds like a great way to expand your knowledge and enjoy some friendly competition.

That's all for now, but check in later for more Tampa Bay Area Events!
