Be The Thunder This Thursday and All Season!

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 by
Hello Tampa! Lisa here, with an update on your Tampa Bay Lightning! BeTheThunder

October has long been my favorite month. You have College Football, NFL, all things pumpkin flavored, cooler temperatures (if we are lucky), and hockey. Each year I forget how much I truly love October until the start of the NHL season. And this year has been no exception.

Hockey season started full strength almost two weeks ago, but it was not until last night that our Lightning were at home for the first time. It was great to see the hustle and bustle of all the Bolts fans walking to the game last night after work. I swear almost everyone had a jersey on.

This season is sure to be full of hat tricks, high-sticking, and hooking but that's not why we love our Lightning. The Lightning showed us their potential last year, and I know they have that same potential this year. Add to that a newly renovated arena with a new logo and you have a recipe for another great season.

Coming up, our Lightning will take on the New York Islanders Thursday night, and the Buffalo Sabre's on Saturday night before going out of town for a couple of games. The Bolts end the month playing the newest NHL team the Winnipeg Jets.

If I were you, I would go online and check out the 10 and 21 game deals the Lightning offer, and secure your spot in this years drive to the playoffs.

That's all for now, but check in later for more Tampa Florida News, and other things to do in Tampa Bay! And remember, BE THE THUNDER.

PAUL CATOE TO RETIRE AS HEAD OF TAMPA BAY & COMPANY

Friday, July 22, 2011 by

pcatoePaul Catoe has announced that he will retire from his current position as president and CEO of Tampa Bay & Company on Oct. 31, 2011.

"The opportunity to work with such a dedicated, professional, exciting and fun staff is an incredible adventure,” explained Catoe. “Being part of the Bureau for more than 12 years was the most rewarding and exhilarating experience of my professional career.  To be able to serve our board of directors, the county, the city, and most of all the community has been deeply gratifying.”

Catoe has served as the organization’s leader since 1999.  In his years of service, Catoe left an indelible mark on the Tampa Bay community and significantly raised the profile of the local hospitality industry.  Under his leadership, Tampa Bay & Company grew in both size and stature, and it is now one of the leading economic development engines in the region.

“Paul has been a role model for his team, the community and the entire state of Florida,” said Jim Bartholomay, general manager of the Tampa Renaissance Hotel International Plaza and Chairman of Tampa Bay & Company Board of Directors.  “His passion and love for Tampa Bay has produced remarkable results.  He is a personal friend and mentor and I, along with the entire industry, will miss him tremendously.”

During his tenure, Catoe led Tampa Bay & Company to expand its scope by incorporating the Tampa Bay Sports Commission and the Tampa Bay Film Commission into its fold.   The organization also underwent a major rebranding and repositioning effort, moving away from the Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau moniker.  Tampa Bay & Company also experienced phenomenal success in elevating the community’s reputation as a capable and competent host for significant national and international meetings, conventions and sporting events.

Tampa Bay & Company boosts the local economy annually by $3 billion and with tireless energy and a steadfast dedication to his community, Catoe has lead the Tampa Bay & Company team to successfully land the area’s fourth Super Bowl, several NCAA championships, and the World Dragon Boat Racing Championship.

In addition, the Shiners International Imperial Session, which was the largest convention ever to come to Tampa in 2006, is slated to return in 2016.  And next year, Tampa Bay will play host to the Republican National Convention, drawing worldwide attention and generating significant economic impact to the region.

A Search Committee has been formed to hire Catoe’s replacement, although he will remain involved with Tampa Bay & Company following his official retirement.  The Board of Directors has asked that he continue to work on the Republican National Convention, the 2015 Super Bowl bid and other projects.

Thanks for the wonderful memories Paul …

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 by

hardrockGood afternoon everyone, who listens to rock music? If you do, Alex here to tell you about a great rock singer and band coming to the Hard Rock Café this July.

Iconic rock and roll innovator Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform in the new Hard Rock Cafe Tampa at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on July 13 at 10 p.m.

Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator and a visionary. As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, she's had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics.

Her music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. Faith Hill sings "I Hate Myself for Loving You" as the theme for NBC's Sunday Night Football and "Bad Reputation" was the theme song for the “Hit Girl” heroine of the hit film, Kick Ass.  Her cover of "Love is All Around" (the theme song of The Mary Tyler Moore Show) became an anthem in women's sports and was used by the NCAA to promote the Women's Final Four. Jett supplied theme songs for the ESPN X-Games premiere and has contributed music to all of their games since.

Adding to Jett’s list of accomplishments is Blackheart Records, an independent label she founded with long time songwriting partner and producer Kenny Laguna, in 1980 - which made her the first female artist to own and operate an independent record company.

The multi-talented Jett has acted in movies, including 1987's Light of Day, and in the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

As a producer, she has overseen albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus, as well as the Germs' LA punk masterpiece, GI. Additionally, she is a spokesperson for PETA and a devoted supporter of the U.S. Military.

Lightning Ranked No.2 in ESPN'S Ultimate Standings

Thursday, June 23, 2011 by
Just when you thought we were done for the season, the Tampa Bay Lightning are at it again! Lisa here, with an update on our Bolts.

Our Tampa Bay Lightning have been named the No. 2 franchise in sports according to ESPN The Magazine's ninth annual "Best Franchises in Sports" rankings, in the "Best in Sports Issue." Our Bolts finished behind the NFL's Green Bay Packers. The Lightning made the largest jump of all teams, improving 68 places from No. 70 last season.

Now I'm going to try and help you understand how they come up with these rankings. The "Best Franchises in Sports" feature is part of ESPN The Magazine's Ultimate Standings methodology study, which determines and overall ranking for pro sports franchises according to how much they give back to fans for their time, money and emotion they invest in them.

"The teams at the top of our Ultimate Standings are winners on the field, but, as we write in the magazine, they're truly notable for returning fans' love - keeping core players, discounting tickets, investing in their communities." Says the editor Peter Keating.

The rankings are determined by a multi-tiered analysis that examines a team's efficiency in spending fan money as compared to its on-field performance. It also factors in feedback in 21 categories from more than 70,000 fans nationwide, bot online and in polling conducted by independent third parties.

We can thank our owner Jeff Vinik for beginning our amazing transformation. When he purchased the lightning last year, he pledged to turn us into a "world-class organization." To prove it, he hired Hockey Hall -of-Famer and four-time Stanley Cup Champion Steve Yzerman as vice president and general manager.

In January of 2011 Vinik announced a detailed vision that included a new logo and jersey, $35 million in privately-funded building renovations to the St. Pete Times Forum, $10 million in community donations and 4,000 hours of community service each season.

The fans have reacted immediately by increasing attendance 11.3% (the best in the league) from 2009-2010. The Tampa Bay Lightning also sold out eight playoff games, averaging nearly 21,000 fans per game.Congrats on No. 2 Lightning

Way to go Lightning! That's all for now, but I'm sure I'll have more Tampa Florida News soon!
