# 7 GEORGIA TECH TO PLAY IN ACC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Monday, November 16, 2009 by Josh Jones
The # 7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (10-1) have won the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference and will contest against the Atlantic Division Champion at the 2009 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship taking place December 5 in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Fla.

Shaping up for a race to the finish in the Atlantic Division are the Clemson Tigers and the Boston College Eagles!  Clemson can clinch a spot in the title game with a win this weekend or a Boston College loss.  Boston College can clinch with a Clemson loss and two more wins in their season.

Will you be there?  Tickets are on sale now for this year’s game, which returns to prime time national television, with an 8 p.m. (ET) kickoff on ESPN.

Georgia Tech's last ACC title was a share in 1998. The Jackets won it outright in 1990, the same year they won the national title. Their last trip to the ACC title game was in 2006. This 2009 Georgia Tech team, though, is viewed by many as the best it's been in a long time.

Clemson’s last ACC title was in 1991 and has never been to the ACC Championship since its existence.

Sunset Cinema...a must attend event!

Saturday, October 17, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Travis here with some Tampa Bay entertainment that is good for the whole family.  You can join the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department for a sunset movie at Medard Park in Planty City.

They are showing the famed Shrek next Sat. Oct. 24.  The movie starts at 7:15pm and the gates open at 5:15pm...so get there early.  Here are some Q&A for you -

WHERE CAN I PARK?  Enter Medard Park at Turkey Creek Road and you will be directed to the FREE parking area by an attendant.

HOW WILL THE FILMS BE SHOWN?  they project the movies on a high-quality digital rear-projection system on a giant, inflatable 50-foot wide screen. Dual, synchronized digital projectors will produce an image that is luminous and crisp, and a powerful sound system will allow guests to enjoy the movie from almost anywhere in the park.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?  Way before the film begins.  You can arrive as early as 5:15pm for Shrek. Part of the fun will be arriving early to picnic, toss a Frisbee, people-watch and enjoy the early evening with your friends and neighbors.  Prior to the film, you might even see yourself on the big screen as snapshots of guests at the park are flashed upon the screen.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?  The Tampa area is known for the scattered showers that are prominent during the late afternoons. The dark sky can intimidate and it may look grim for an outdoor movie, but don't let that scare you away. We will show a movie in light rain. We will only stop the show for safety reasons if there are very strong winds or lightning in the vicinity. Otherwise...the show will go on!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?  Along with your friends and family, you might want to bring blankets, compact beach or lawn chairs, your own snacks, beverages, and rain gear if the weather is iffy.  If you like to toss nerf balls or Frisbees, bring them.  If you like to read, bring a book to read prior to sunset and the start of the movie.

WHAT FOOD, BEVERAGES AND MERCHANDISE WILL BE AVAILABLE?  Tampa Theatre will provide all Sunset Cinema concessions and merchandise booths, featuring a traditional theater concessions stand offering popcorn ($2), candy ($3) soft drinks ($2) Gatorade, bottled water ($3), and juice boxes for the kids ($1).  Fun souvenirs like official Sunset Cinema Frisbees and picnic blankets will also be available.  Proceeds from concessions and merchandise sales help support Tampa Theatre’s year-round artistic and educational programming, and offset the cost of producing Sunset Cinema events.

CAN I BRING MY DOG(S)?  Well behaved pets are allowed as long as they are kept on a leash. Please clean up after your pets. We love our dogs just as much as you, but we will revisit our policy if pet owners are inconsiderate of others, or if the large crowds, darkness and abrupt loudness of the movies make pets disruptive to others.

HOW MUCH DO TICKETS COST?  Admission is FREE!

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS?  e-mail gargoyles@tampatheatre.org – "our small but intrepid staff will answer e-mail questions within 24 hours (Monday through Friday)."

So, get the friends and family ready, and go have some fun.

we'll see you here next time for more great things to do in Tampa Bay and other Tampa Bay area events.

RoadTweets is in the App Store!!!

Thursday, October 8, 2009 by jeremy fairley
So by now you guys should know that I have a love of Apple products in general, but am a huge fan of the IPhone, AKA the greatest invention since the air conditioner! In that love of the IPhone, also comes a love of great apps. I actually have about 3 1/2 pages worth of apps on my 3GS as we speak and am always on the lookout for another good one!

Well the wait was over this Monday when my friends over at Cost 2 Drive, launched their new IPhone App RoadTweets! Now I know you may be thinking... what the heck is a Road Tweet? The act of Road Tweeting is RoadTweeting is using Twitter to send trip updates (tweets) to followers while traveling.

It's a smartphone application that makes it super easy to capture and share travel experiences from the road. So next time you take that  long road trip and want to keep your friends and family updated on your progress, feel free to RoadTweet your tail off! So when you are making that long drive down the east coast to come to see all of our great Tampa Florida attractions, like the Florida Aquarium, you can document your trip every step of the way!

Now while, this is an app that is used for taking long road trips, myself as well as the gang over at Cost 2 Drive would like to remind that you should not be Tweeting and driving.  I have had the chance to test the app out over the course of the last few days and its functional as well as having a pretty easy to use interface, which are two things that I look for in each app that I download!

This one should come in handy come November when I am planning to take a long Road Trip to DC to visit friends! I am sure everyone waiting on me will want to know my progress as I trek along the interstates and highways.

Well Jerm is signing out now, but be sure to stay up to date all the great things to do in Tampa Bay and with my travel related IPhone app reviews here in the coming weeks and months!

Paddler Update from Prague

Sunday, August 30, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company
Hey gang...Phil here from the world dragon boat championship in Prague...bringing you day 7 (Saturday) update.  Last night several of us hopped the Metro and headed back into Prague for a pig’s knuckle dinner.  Actually I had venison ragout.  Please don’t tell my daughter Cassidy or my son Coyt that I ordered Bambi’s mom!  I don’t think my wife, Cindy, would mind but she’d have to deal with their reaction so it’s better we just keep it between us.

It was served in a bread bowl and was excellent.  There were two orders of pig’s knuckles at our table so everyone got to share some.  Paul Clermont, aka “double giant mug” accepted the challenge and downed two of the double giants. . . without the slightest evidence of any impact.  Simply amazing!  I, on the other hand, had a half liter of dark and refused to be goaded into anything larger by the youngster.

Marc Applewhite, aka the gentle giant, quietly sat along side witnessing all this waiting quietly for everyone to eat as much as they could of their orders, which are always generous over here.  Marc has gladly accepted the position in the group as the clean-up batter.  Each plate with something left on it gets passed to Marc where it quickly gets cleaned-up.    While there are many restaurants where you can get almost any fare, I recommend ordering traditional Czech cuisine.

None of us have encountered a Czech meal that wasn’t outstanding both in taste and price!  Christine Canevari and Kevin Burns joined us late in our dinner.  The conversation turned to a discussion of the good, bad and ugly regarding these racing events.  We covered topics ranging from international politics to food, lodging, water, race course conditions, hygiene (including single ply vs double ply toilet tissue) and many more.

They are deeply committed to learning all they can to make the 2011 World Championships in Tampa the best it possibly can be and preferably the best ever.  I have no concern that Tampa will not host a world class event in 2011 with these guys and the rest of the Tampa team at the helm.

It’s another beautiful day, especially since we got to sleep in.  Today is the day that we begin the 500 meter races.  In the morning, the junior teams race along with some local team racing so the “adult” teams aren’t scheduled until after lunch which allowed us to “sleep in”.  Most of us were up by 7:00 am and down for breakfast shortly after.

I’m looking for someone to spill coffee on me early this morning.  I just learned that yesterday one of our women paddlers, Deborah Sandidge, a paddler from the west coast,   was warming up and a cup of coffee sitting on a ledge above her fell off on to her.  She had coffee all over her.  She was going to change until someone told her that in the Czech Republic you can expect good luck if someone spills coffee on you.

So, she decided not to change.  Now, I don’t really believe in superstitions, and I would never take any credit away from these phenomenal female athletes and how they performed yesterday, however, I’m also not adverse to trying anything to help us guys perform better than we did yesterday.  So, where’s that coffee cup?

The racing is over now.  Another long afternoon of: preparing for racing, racing, cooling down from racing, waiting, then preparing again, then repeat a few more times.  Even though all three of the mixed teams qualified for the medal rounds, by either winning their first heat which moved them immediately into the medal round (my GM mixed team accomplished that), or by qualifying in the subsequent heats, only one of the teams could muster up the speed to capture a medal.  Thankfully, for me at least, that team was the GM mixed.  Remember, Pam and I are on the GM mixed.  So, I logged my third medal and Pam logged her fourth.

It’s hard to believe that we only have one day of racing left in the 2009 World Championships.  The time has flown and has been loaded with hard racing and great memories.  I don’t want to get ahead of myself so I’ll wait until the racing is over before I philosophize too much.

So, it’s back to the hotel to get cleaned up, get a bite to eat, hopefully back into Prague . . .which I still haven’t really seen in the daylight, and back for an early lights out to be ready for the men’s and women’s divisions of the 500 meter races and the Closing Ceremonies.

At the closing ceremonies the baton will get handed to the Tampa Representatives for hosting the next world championships in 2011.  More soon about the last day of racing in Prague!

Paddler News From Prague!

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey Tampa Bay...here's your day 2 recap from here in Prague!

The excitement and intensity is building.  Most of the team members have arrived now.  There are paddlers from many states across the country, including the Pacific coast states.  Eventually, we will have about 190 paddlers representing the United States.

Our practice this afternoon went very well.  Each of the nine teams and the two junior teams got to paddle together for the first time.  It’s amazing how well each team came together and within a few minutes began to look like they had paddled together for a long time.

We all feel the need (and pressure) to adapt to a common stroke technique as quickly and efficiently as possible.  Coach Bob McNamara was incredibly patient getting each team organized and briefed regarding the various strategies and techniques each team would employ during the races.  The practices weren’t long, like the ones we have during the regular season.

These are tuning and technique sessions; starts, transitions, power series, finishes, etc.  I’m sitting in the back of the boat.  On the Senior A men’s team I’m in row 9, and on the Senior B Mixed team I’m in row 7.  I’ve always paddled from row 4 in Tampa, so I’m adjusting to the water moving more from the paddlers ahead of me.  It makes me want to work even harder.  Fitness and the ability to adapt and keep up is assumed and expected.  No problem for the Florida contingency!

I was breathing pretty hard a couple of times, but don’t tell anyone.  I didn’t let it show!

The weather is gorgeous. . . warm, sunny and perky.  Sometimes it’s a little hard to concentrate.  Remember, we’re in Europe.  It’s summer and the race facility is essentially open to the public.  There is a paved road around the entire water area so it’s a great workout area.  While not crowded, there are cyclists, runners, roller-bladers and sun bathers.

Yes, sun bathers.  It’s Europe remember.  And there were couples along the shore sunbathing.  So, on a couple of runs down the course our steersperson, Simon Shum (Miami, remember) seemed to only be able to find an open outside lane, outside, like close to shore.  The view on shore required our drummer (Angela) to bark “eyes in the boat” many times as we paddled down the course.  I think it did give our team a lift.

At the end of practice, everyone was pumped at how well it had gone. . . not perfectly, but very well and we knew that tomorrow we’d iron out the last bugs and be in great shape for Wednesday’s opening ceremonies and the first official races of these 9th World Dragon Boat Championships.  We were slapping each other’s backs and high-five’ing.  This is going to be fun!

(By the way, we saw one of the Chinese teams. . . again, they pretty darn good! .. .very fast stroke rate.  But can they do that for a 500 or 1,000 meters, I, for one, doubt it.)

We hopped back on the buses for the hour trip back into Prague looking forward to hot showers and a good restaurant for dinner.  This is a long way from the Tampa Bay dining and Tampa Bay nightlife that we are used to, but it's great!

Lights out will be early tonight because our last practices before racing are in the morning.

Good night, and more later.

Update from Prague...for the World Dragon Boat Racing Championship!

Monday, August 24, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hi everyone...Phil here, paddling for Team USA.  We are going to take you out of the world of Tampa Bay events and Tampa Bay entertainment, and take you across the world.

It's Monday morning here in Prague.  Pam, Dan and I arrived at Tampa International Airport on Saturday morning all excited and ready to go.  We cannot believe we're about to cross the big pond to represent the USA in an international competion.

Everyone in Tampa has been so incredibly supportive, believe me when I say that we feel incredibly honored to represent the USA and Tampa and feel an equal level of responsibility to represent the USA and Tampa as best we can.  Little did we know we'd have a competition sooner than expected.  After checking in and heading for the Delta airside, we encountered our first international competition event.

Pam "took on" the tram boarding agent who wouldn't allow her carry-on bag to go over to airside.  After some prying and peeling I got Pam to settle down, she bought another carry-on of appropriate size, we re-packed her stuff and successfully crossed the tram entrance barrier!

We luckily avoided an early "international incident" in the trip.  We don't have to worry about Pam and competition. . .the killer instinct is in full force.  After a few "normal" delays with flights we departed JFK about an hour late and with several more USA team members catching the same flight to Prague.

The excitement was building as we all anxiously exchanged greetings and notes on our trips so far getting to JFK.  Some of the competitors were arriving from the west coast.  Jet lag here we come.  About nine LONG hours later, now Sunday morning about 2:00am est, we landed in Prague - 9:00am Prague time.

After a quick check-in at the Clarion Congress Hotel (very nice, I might add) and breakfast we headed into Prague for a quick look-see.  After figuring out the local currency and the metro we got into Prague.  It is, as I know you've heard, a beautiful city full of old historic buildings with incredible architecture.

We couldn't stay long as we were scheduled for our first practice at the race site in the afternoon.  But our appetite had been wetted for more of Prague. . .I know you'll hear more later.  Back at the hotel, we all gathered at about 2:30pm (remember, we haven't really slept, can't really count the plane, since Friday night yet!), boarded two buses and headed for the race site in Racicie.

While only about 24 miles, it took about an hour to get there.  I fought the desire to sleep, but some of the others couldn't fight it off and took little naps!  The race site is a huge man-made lake.  It is eight to ten lanes wide and well over 1,000 meters long.  As I understand, it was created after mining sand left the area with this large dregded out area.  It was great to get some exercise and wipe out the cobweds.

My batter is low so I'm signing off for now...and looking for a plug.  More later.

From Aruba to Cuba: Island Nights in Tampa Bay

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 by Bay Bloggers
Hi All, Christina here with the latest in Tampa Bay Entertainment.

While the sun heats up the day, we here in the bay area flock towards the beautiful beaches to cool off. But, what do we do when the nights are still and warm?

Simple - head over to Adventure Island and bask in the Island Nights. FUN!!

Island Nights are theme oriented event held over the weekend at the park; Friday and Saturday night through August 15th between 5 and 9 p.m., so hurry!!

From live music to fire elements at Mango Joe's, an assortment of tangible island food like conch fritters to key lime pie just waiting to be devoured and a live DJ spinning those tunes to set the mood of the Islands.

Being an island girl myself, I would definitely squeeze this into my Tampa Bay Nightlife list. Think about the exciting rides like Riptide, Key West Rapids and Runaway Rapides to give the chilling thrills. Exotic birds, stilt-walkers, beach games and more to make that more enjoyable. The best part - it's for all ages.

So go on over to Adventure Island, it's right across from Busch Gardens and have a blast. And on that note, I shall take your leave.

But, stayed in tuned for things to do in Tampa Bay. Adios.

Ritz-Worthy Views at an Affordable Price

Outside Pool/Dock ViewThe Radisson Bay Harbor Hotel in Tampa's Westshore district, after undergoing a complete renovation project, is re-emerging as the Best Western Bay Harbor Hotel. I recently had the opportunity to rediscover this hotel property, and I was very pleasantly surprised.

The 257-room Best Western sits on a piece of land that was almost the home to a new Ritz-Carlton hotel, until plans changed. Decisions were then made to renovate and re-brand the hotel into a Best Western, and after $10 million in renovations... well, you just have to see it to believe it!

Best Western King RoomEvery guest room is appointed with flat screen televisions, complimentary in-room coffee, complimentary high-speed wireless Internet and balconies with absolutely breathtaking views of the Bay. Among the other amenities that are included in your stay: a heated waterfront pool, volleyball courts, fishing pier/boat dock (with jet ski rentals!), free airport and local restaurant/shopping shuttle, business center, fitness center and last- but not least- a Crabby Bills Beach Club attached to the hotel.

You can order from Crabby's extensive seafood menu and have it delivered to your room, or you can go down to the restaurant and enjoy live music and a cocktail while watching the sun set. It doesn't get any better than that!

For more information on this hotel or to book your next room, visit the hotel's Web site, or contact a Tampa Bay & Company sales staff member. As always, thanks for stopping by and stay tuned for more Tampa Bay hotel updates!

The Big Five-Zero for Busch Gardens!!

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Bay Bloggers
Hi Everyone, Christina here with the latest in Tampa Bay Entertainment.

So, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is celebrating 50 years this summer and if you know Busch, they love to show their park-hopper a mind-blowing time.

To kick off this wonderful season, the park is hosting 'Summer Nights' for every night of this scorching summer. Yay. What does Summer Nights include? Firstly, the park has extended its hours till 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursday and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Haven't you always wished the park stayed open till late, well now it is.

What's even more fun and exciting about Summer Nights, DJs will be pumping those party sound waves throughout the park from four different spots. I always wanted to rock it at a entertainment park, what about you? Just picture, listening to the sickest hip-hop beats while standing in line for Sheikra. The music might help calm those nerves before that insanely terrifying 200 foot 90 degree angle drop!!!

To commemorate the park's 50th, a massive 70-foot exhibit of photos displays the beginnings of Busch Gardens as a bird park and brewery to one of the world's A-list in adventure parks. Photos, souvenirs and artifacts of the park are on display, so go take a look.

If you want to add something to your Tampa Bay Area events calender, Summer Nights needs to be definitely penned down. It's fun for you and your family, or even you and special someone. At Busch Gardens anything goes. So make a trip down there.

As for me, I already have my fun card so I might wind up there. That's it from me, catch up with me later for more things to do in Tampa Bay. Cheers.
