I am sure there are plenty more to come in the near future with the way these guys have been been working hard to make sure all of their guests feel at home. If you remember a while back, I wrote about some of the great events they do after hours for guests.

Along with all of the other great things about the Crowne, you can also go onto their website and find great packages and deals for your family vacation, girlfriend getaway, mancation, or other themed vacation ideas.

Long story short, these guys have it all, and after year one of the renovations, you can bet your tail its only going to get better! Again though, you don't have to take my word for it, just call or book directly and see for yourself!

This is Jerm signing off for now, but be sure to check back for more Tampa Bay hotel updates from the Westshore District!

Columbia Restaurant Named an All-American Icon

Monday, February 8, 2010 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone.  Travis back with some really cool news...The Columbia Restaurant of Ybor City was named an  All-American Icon by Nation’s Restaurant News.  Ok, before we go on, let's all give a huge round of applause to the Columbia!!!!!!!!!

Ok, here are the details that we received -

Nation’s Restaurant News created their list of fifty All-American Icon restaurants “As a testament to the large number of restaurants that have persevered through the years and continue to be part of our social fabric.”

In compiling the list, Nation’s Restaurant News sought to highlight longtime concepts that are not only intriguing, but also offer a broad representation of industry segments, foods and locales.  They looked for concepts that reflect the industry’s limitless entrepreneurialism and tell the stories of the communities that these restaurants have enriched.

The Columbia Restaurant of Ybor City was founded in 1905 and is the oldest restaurant in Florida. All Columbia locations are owned and operated by 4th and 5th generation members of the founding family.

The magazine also strove to give insight into the allure of the concept, the food, personalities and lore that keep customers coming back decade after decade.  Other Florida restaurants named to this list of All-American Icons include Bern’s Steak House in Tampa, and Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami.

According to the magazine, “No other institution in Tampa is as entwined with the city’s history.”  “Columbia offers classics such as the “1905” Salad –450 are served daily; more than 164,000 annually – or chicken and yellow rice or snapper.  But The Columbia’s cuisine is diverse and can be described even as fusion because its home base in Ybor City has Spanish, Italian and Cuban roots.”

Nation’s Restaurant News says, “The Columbia is far from fading, with six other Florida locations in St. Armands Circle on Sarasota; Historic District of St. Augustine, The Pier in St. Petersburg; Sand Key in Clearwater Beach; Downtown Celebration; and The Columbia Café at the Tampa Bay History Center in Channelside.”

And there you have it.  Not that you needed it, but here's another reason to get out and go eat dinner at the Columbia!  So have fun!

And we'll see you back here for more news, as well as great things to do in Tampa Bay, cool Tampa Bay area events, and much much more.

Congrats to the Crowne Plaza Tampa Westshore...

Friday, January 22, 2010 by Convention Sales
How is everyone doing this fine Friday morning! I myself am suffering from a bit of insomnia as I haven't slept in roughly the past 24 hours.

Don't really know why that's happening but I wanted to make sure that I could summon enough energy to tell you about a cool award(s) for one of our Tampa Bay hotel properties located in the lovely Westshore district!

As one of Tampa's newest premier hotels, the Crowne Plaza Tampa Westshore offers a uniqueness all its own that can perhaps be best described as modern and fresh, yet elegantly posh. It seems like only yesterday this place first opened up its newly "transformed" doors, and they are already winning awards!

The Crowne Plaza Tampa Westshore was recently named the Florida West Coast Chapter National Association of Catering Executives 2009 Venue of the Year Award! Now keep in mind that this is in addition to to two other awards these guys won last year, in the form of the IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) 2009 Renovations Award, as well as the IHG 2009 Meetings Service Excellence Award for the 2nd Quarter.

At this rate of winning awards, they are going to have to convert one of the executive suites into a trophy room here shortly! A great team effort, by the staff over there is sure to be the reason for the early as well as continued success as they forge on into 2010. Mark Jerm's words when he says this won't be the last award to be won!

I am working on setting up a tour of the place and getting you some pictures, so that in addition to my kind words, you will have a visual element to base your decision on when you call and book your hotel stay!  For what its worth though, guests who spend a few nights here will be thoroughly impressed with all that the Crowne Plaza Tampa Westshore has to offer!

That's all for now from Jerm, but stay tuned in for more info on hotel related Tampa Bay meetings news and events from us!

Shomari McKenzie's A Journey Through US

Thursday, December 17, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hi everyone!  Travis here again!  Seeing as how the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts has so much going on right now, I figured we could bring you more Tampa Bay area events happening out there.  So, here we go.

Shomari McKenzie's A Journey Through US is playing at the Shimberg Playhouse (at the Center) on Dec. 19.  Here's some background on Shomari and the show:

Shomari McKenzie was born and raised in Tampa, Fla. He has always been a history buff, which led him to look at different phases of time and write about it.

He has been performing on the east coast – storytelling and doing stand-up comedy about his personal experiences. McKenzie then decided the best person to bring his writings to life was himself.

In A Journey Through US, he examines many different characters – from slaves being brought from Africa, to notable people we have read about, to folks like those we see across the dinner table each night. It will make you think; it will make you laugh.

At the end of the evening, you will have had a lot of fun as well as a lot to talk about. McKenzie is excited to bring his one-man play to Tampa.  Oh, and it's recommended for ages 13 and older, and the running time is about 1 hour and 40 minutes!

Regularly priced tickets start at $20, so again, a pretty good deal!  Head over to www.tbpac.org to order your tickets and get more info!  Have a great time!

See you soon with more things to do in Tampa Bay for the holidays, and other amazing Tampa Bay entertainment options.

A 48-Hour Success for the ACC and Tampa Bay!

Tuesday, December 8, 2009 by Josh Jones
Josh Jones here with a recap of the 2009 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship weekend!
The atmosphere at Raymond James Stadium was electric as 57,227 tickets were sold and distributed in Saturday night's ACC championship game.

Jonathan Dwyer's 15-yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining gave the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets a 39-34 victory over No. 25 Clemson in the prime-time match-up between the two division champions.

Josh Nesbitt threw a 70-yard TD pass to DeMaryius Thomas and Scott Blair kicked a title game-record four field goals to help the Yellow Jackets (11-2) win the crown - Tech's first since sharing it with Florida State in 1998 - in their second season under coach Paul Johnson.

ACC player of the year C.J. Spiller rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns for Clemson (8-5).  Spiller’s performance was good enough to earn him the game’s MVP Award. Spiller is the first person from the losing team to win the championship game’s MVP Award.
Now, if you thought the game brought the excitement, take a minute to rewind the weekend!

Kicking off the 48-hour celebration of ACC Football were Friday’s events that showcased many of the conference’s past, present, and future champions and helped preface the exciting atmosphere that would follow the next day.

The Coaches and Awards Luncheon presented by Tampa Bay & Company, that took place at the Tampa Convention Center highlighted the two participating coaches discussing their seasons as well as the 2009 ACC Football Awards being presented.  Here is a quick run down of the award recipients from this year’s event.

•    C. J. Spiller, Clemson: ACC Offensive and Player of the Year
•    Derrick Morgan, Georgia Tech: ACC Defensive Player of the Year
•    Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech: ACC Rookie and Offensive Rookie of the Year
•    Luke Kuechly, Boston College: ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year
•    Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech:  ACC Coach of the Year
•    Riley Skinner, Wake Forest: ACC Jim Tatum Award
•    Toney Baker, NC State:  ACC Brian Piccolo Award
•    Rodney Hudson: ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy

Friday night’s festivities had something for everyone.  At the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay was the exclusive ACC Night of Legends reception presented by the Florida Sports Foundation, that honored 12 outstanding legends from the 12 ACC schools.  This year’s legends class was highlighted by two state standouts and former Heisman trophy winners in Chris Weinke (Florida State) and Vinny Testaverde (Miami), and one of the ACC’s winningest coaches in Danny Ford (Clemson).

Taking place across town was the biggest downtown party for the weekend in Channelside’s Toast to the Atlantic Coast.  The event saw a Pep Rally from each participating institution’s marching band, and all 12 ACC school mascots.  Splitsville and Stump’s Supper Club served as fan central with food and drink specials for all ACC fans.

On Saturday afternoon, ACC FanFest set the stage for the day with over 200,000 square feet of interactive games, team mascots, pep rallies, food and beverage, autograph signings, game merchandise, jumbotrons, and general family fun.  CMA Award Winning country music artist James Otto helped energize the crowd in his pre-game concert performance.

The Atlantic Coast Conference was pleased with Tampa Bay’s performance. "I saw a lot of orange (Clemson colors) and a lot of gold (Georgia Tech colors),'' ACC associate commissioner for football operations Michael Kelly said. "It showed well on TV and things went well in the community. It was a good matchup and the fan base was energized.”

That's it for now, but be sure to stay up to date for news on Tampa Bay Sports and Tampa Bay area events here in the next few days! Stayed tuned in for more from me and your Tampa Bay team!

Experiencing Wonderland: Alice's New Musical Adventure in Tampa Bay

Monday, December 7, 2009 by Partner Pulse
For a great family adventure take a few minutes from Holiday Shopping in Tampa Bay and spend a night or afternoon finding Wonderland!

Since it is too cold to visit Tampa Bay Area Beaches and who wants to brave the cold for Buccaneers Football the perfect Tampa Bay activity is experiencing Wonderland: Alice's New Musical Adventure; produced locally by Tampa Bay's very own David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts.

With excellent music and awe-inspiring special effects the entire family will never forget following Alice, a children’s book writer, through Manhattan while she suffers through a creative block, estrangement from her husband and alienation from her daughter.

In this world premiere of a new musical by lyricist Jack Murphy, book writers Jack Murphy and Gregory Boyd and acclaimed composer Frank Wildhorn, you follow Alice to a strange-yet-familiar Wonderland for her to regain her life’s balance and again find the love and everyday magic that reside in us all – if we know how to look.

Wildhorn’s score taps into numerous pop styles, and Murphy’s lyrics provide both wit and wisdom.  Jekyll and Hide with score by Wildhorn tops my list of favorite musicals of all time.  He does not disappoint with Wonderland.  You will find yourself singing certain songs as you leave the theatre and head back out to finish Holiday Shopping in Tampa Bay with a much better attitude!

It’s been quite a trip, but we’re really looking forward to meeting all of you at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo for Winter Wonderland! There will be a million twinkling light, glimmering holiday displays, and of course, our favorite guy – Santa!

Cruz was shot by a sniper in Tikrit, Iraq on Aug. 14, 2005 and as a result of the gunshot wound, has a spinal cord injury

Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson Named ACC Coach of the Year by the ACSMA

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 by Josh Jones
Hello there sports enthusiasts! With Jones Jones working hard on the ACC Football Championship, Jerm is going to fill in for the remainder of the week and give you the skinny on whats goin down in the Tampa Bay Sports arena! Here goes!

Image Courtesy of the ACCWho says that all habits are bad! Especially when the habit is winning coach of the year awards! Congrats to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Head Coach Paul Johnson for winning his second consecutive coach of the year award voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

This marks the sixth time a Georgia Tech coach has received the award, and the third time this decade after George O'Leary won the award in 2000! These Yellow Jacket coaches are making a nasty habit of winning stuff this year, and will want to continue that this weekend I am sure!

Johnson claimed the award last year after the Yellow Jackets burst onto the scene and ran his prolific option-based offense in what I can only describe as a clinical faashion. They even managed to one-up themselves this year by winning the Coastal Division for the first time since 2006, claiming a spot in the league title game and vaulting into the top 10.

They kicked some tail this year on offense while on their way to a 10-2 overall record amongst some other pretty impressive accolades:

  • Led the ACC in scoring (35 points per game)
  • Total offense (440.5 ypg),
  • Rushing offense (305 ypg)
  • Pass efficiency (160.7 rating)
Coach Johnson and the Jackets had an impressive five starters make the All-ACC first team – including quarterback Josh Nesbitt, running back Jonathan Dwyer and receiver  Demaryius Thomas.

These guys efforts fueled Georgia Tech with a (10-2, 7-1) finish with the ACC's best overall and conference records of the season.

Add all of that up and it makes for a pretty mouth watering match-up with the Clemson Tigers this Saturday evening at Raymond James Stadium! I am looking forward to it and am confident it will be a showdown for the ages.

As far as Tampa Bay area events go, this will be a match-up for the ages, so log-on to www.TheRoadToTampaBay.com and get your tickets!
