TAMPA’S LOWRY PARK ZOO NAMES MEDICAL SCIENCES DIRECTOR...

Wednesday, September 8, 2010 by Tampa Bay & Company
Hey Tampa Bay... Julian here with some exciting news from our wonderful Zoo here in Tampa, which I visited myself last weekend: Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo!

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo today announced the appointment of Ray Ball, DVM, to the position of director of medical sciences.  Ball, who has nearly a decade of experience working with the Zoo’s animal department as a relief veterinarian, most recently served as a senior veterinarian at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay for 14 years.

Ball will lead a veterinary staff of five and seven critical care staff at the Zoo’s manatee hospital.  His leadership in conservation programs managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) includes advisory roles with Species Survival Plans (SSP), Population Management Plans (PMP) and the Nutrition Scientific Advisory Group (NAG) for elephants. “Dr. Ball will lead staff to provide daily veterinary care for rescued wildlife and animals in conservation programs, and he will play a pivotal role in the Zoo being a center for learning,” said Craig Pugh, executive director and CEO. “Dr. Ball is a practical vet and patient teacher.”

In addition to previous work at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, Ball serves as a contract veterinarian at Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. “The Zoo has a long proven history and dedication to providing vital care for sick and injured manatees, and the selection of Dr. Ball serves to further complement the Zoo’s experienced manatee critical care staff,” said Patrick Rose, executive director of the Save the Manatee Club.

Ball graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and spent a year in private practice.  He gained zoological experience through an internship at Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina and a residency specializing in zoo and wildlife medicine at Kansas State University and the Topeka Zoo.

“The commitment Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has made toward providing the highest standards of care for the collection, its dedication to education, and the advancement of conservation awareness is impressive,” said Ball.  “I consider myself fortunate to become a part of such a passionate and enthusiastic team.” Ball’s academic publications include numerous articles on topics ranging from wildlife anesthesia and epidemiology to operant conditioning as a tool for improved veterinary care. “Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is exceptionally fortunate to have gained such a passionate, professional and competent director of medical sciences,” noted Jonathan Miot, director and assistant professor at Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo.  “Dr. Ball consistently strives to improve and educate his colleagues, who will benefit from his presence.”

A Trip to The PostCard Inn and WildWood BBQ & Burger...

Wednesday, September 8, 2010 by Bay Bloggers
Hello gang! Jerm here with yet another update on awesome place I just visited recently. Now I know at this point you must be thinking that all I do each day is go out to awesome hotels, and dine out at nice restaurants all week long, but let me assure you that I do actually do some work in the office!

Before I get sidetracked on that though, let me tell you about my trip yesterday to the Post Card Inn and Wildwoods BBQ & Burger out on St. Pete Beach! These two gems are nestled over on St. Pete Beach off of Gulf Blvd. If you live in Tampa and were here around Labor Day this past Monday, then you may have heard about the Post Card Inn as its become the Tampa Bay area's new beach hot spot!

Lets kick things off with my awesome meal at WildWoods BBQ & Burger! I can honestly say that this place is one of the few around that serve multi-regional BBQ cuisine. Whether you are in the mood for St. Louis, Memphis, or Kansas City, Wildwood doesn't disappoint, as this is Tampa Bay dining at its best!

I figured I would have a go at the full rack of Memphis Style Baby Back ribs, and boy was it a task to make it through that whole rack. So much so, I actually ended up boxing it up and taking it with me (which isn't a bad thing either)!

All of the other dishes around me that the group had looked great also, as the table was full of pulled pork sandwiches, grill chicken salads, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, and mahi fish tacos! If that made your mouth water like it did mine, then I highly suggest you checking out the menu. Once I was able to pry myself from my seat due to a fully belly, it was onward to take a tour of the hotel!

This casual, vintage inspired beachfront property is great for the family looking to spend the weekend at the beach on vacation, or the business traveler here for a few days. Here are just a few of the feature of the property just to give you a little taste:
  • Poolside Beach Bungalows *Based on availability
  • King and Queen Beds
  • Private Patios connecting to the pool (some of these even have hammocks)
  • Free Wifi access
  • Vintage light fixtures
  • 32 inch HD television
To add to all of that, they do great weekend events and have live music going on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the PCI Bar and Shack located at the back of the property, on the beach. Yes folks I said beach! After all of the awesome features I named, this place is also on the beach, which makes it even better!

Again, guys I can sit here and talk about how awesome this place is all day long, but I'll just invite you to go and check it out for yourself. Be sure to visit the website at http://www.postcardinn.com/! Be sure to catch them on Facebook and Twitter as well!

The only thing better than all of those amenities, is the first class service from the staff. Your truly made to feel like you are at home at this place folks!

Well that's all for now folks, but be sure to stay tuned in for updates on where to eat and where to stay in Tampa Bay!

Two New Aussies Arrive at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo!

Thursday, September 2, 2010 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone!  Travis back with some Tampa Bay Entertainment information.  We are heading out to see our friends at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo! Here's the lastest news -

Summer may be nearing an end, but fall fun has just begun with the arrival of two charming young koalas who flew coast to coast just in time for the holiday weekend at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

Dane, a two-year-old male, and Kirrhi, a two-year-old female, have settled in to their new home in Wallaroo Station, the Zoo’s 4.5 acre Australian-themed children’s zoo. The Queensland koala habitat at the Zoo is climate controlled, since these “mates” prefer less humidity than Florida’s climate generally offers.

Kirrhi and Dane will spend as much as 18-20 hours each day sleeping or resting, leaving them about four to six hours of free time for eating and socializing. Koalas rarely leave the trees they live in and use their sharp claws and opposable thumbs to help keep them safely secured to their tree while they sleep and eat. They also have extra thick fur on their back sides to help cushion them while sitting on branches – which comes in handy when you sit all day.

Koalas have especially slow metabolisms, partially due to their diet. They eat only eucalyptus leaves which contain toxic oil that is poisonous to most animals. Koalas have bacteria in their stomachs which can break down the harmful oils, but it still takes most of a koala’s energy just to digest and eliminate the toxins.  Eating eucalyptus has an added benefit of providing koalas with most of the moisture they need.

The koala habitat is open daily, during Zoo operating hours.  The animals are on loan from The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and are part of the Species Survival Plan under the guidance of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

And there's the exciting news...I don't know about you, but I can tell you that I'm excited about heading out there to see the Zoo's new guests!  Have fun if you go...

And keep checking back here for more updates about great things to do in Tampa Bay, or Tampa Bay Area Events info.

A Trip to Keel and Curley Winery for Jerm and the Crew...

Wednesday, September 1, 2010 by Partner Pulse
Wine at Keel & CurleyHello there guys! Jerm here with some Tampa bay dining related news.

I must admit, that I am not much of a wine drinker, so when I was talked into taking a trip to Plant City for a wine tasting at Keel & Curley Winery, I did have my reservations.

In addition to not liking wine that much, I thought the drive was just going to be so long and given it was the end of the day, I would be even more tired than normal.

Oh how I love to be proven wrong though, as I was on this occasion in both regards! First off let me talk about how quick and easy the drive was. Its actually Just off of exit 17 at Branch Forbes Road right off of I-4, which was not a great distance at all from our offices. When we pulled up, I was really expecting to see a huge warehouse type building full of thousands of wine, you know something not very inviting.

Again though I was proved wrong, as its not just a place for wine, but also a place for happy hours, weddings, and other events! If that isn't too your liking, then just take a date or some friends and go hang out at the bar inside the tasting room and sample some of the tastiest wines around! Every Friday on the outside patio, in partnership with Fresco's Bakery & Bistro they offer Wine and Dine for only $49! That gets you a bottle of wine, 2 salads, 2 entrees and a dessert!

We sampled a number of wines, so much so, that I was feeling pretty good by the time we left. But I couldn't stay away from the Blueberry taste for long, as I actually bought two bottles of wine for the road (Don't worry , I wasn't driving)! Remember earlier I told you that I don't really even like wine, but I am officially a new customer.

Just when I thought I didn't need another reason to love this place, what did I see? In addition to wine, the atmosphere of a country store reminds me of home, as they have many of the items that a country boy like me from Mississippi would love, like Sweet Pickles, BBQ Sauces, Blueberry Pancake Mixes, and so much more! Next time Mama Jerm visits me from home, we'll have to take a ride out to Plant City and see the gang at Keel and Curley.

I could ramble on for days about this place though, but I'll go ahead and cut this one short! So that its folks, it was a great trip! Be sure to head out to  Keel & Curley to spend some time on the beautiful, spacious deck and enjoy the county air and be sure to sample some of Florida's #1 wine! Spend an enjoyable afternoon tasting, shopping or just relaxing at Keel & Curley Winery!

Be sure to check back in for updates from us on Keel & Curley and things to do in Tampa Bay!

USF College of The Arts Distinguished Lecture Series: Esteemed Designer, Innovator, and just plain visionary… Bruce Mau!!

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 by Tampa Bay & Company
Hey folks... Julian back again with one more update: “Love your experiments (as you would an ugly child),” “Don’t clean your desk,” and “Make new words” are just a few of the rules that visionary, innovator, designer, and author Bruce Mau lives by. Calling him a visionary seems lofty but then again he tends to tackle the lofty. From his book Massive Change to his most recent The Third Teacher: 79 Ways You Can Transform Teaching and Learning, Mau communicates his vision of changing the design of the world. Again, a lofty challenge, but be assured he will convince you that it’s a lot easier than you think; just don’t clean your desk.

Informed by 25 years of studio experience in design innovation and collaboration with some of the world’s leading artists, institutions and businesses, Bruce Mau has made the simple commitment to connect his life and work to education and human development. Motivated by the idea that we need to rethink our future and the way we will live in it, he asks in his widely successful Massive Change, “Now that we can do anything, what will we do? What if life itself became a design project?”

Bruce Mau’s newest book, The Third Teacher (Abrams, April 2010) which he and his studio co-authored with OWP/P Architects and VS Furniture, presents a collection of ways that design can transform teaching and learning for students, families and teachers to thrive in tomorrow’s world. Mau is engaging USF courtesy of the College of The Arts Distinguished Lecture Series (formally Talk of The Arts), and sponsored in part by the Arnold and Louise Kotler Memorial Endowment, Macy’s Distinguished Arts Lecture/ Performance Fund, Lee and Victor Leavengood CAM Endowment, Stuart S. Golding Eminent Chair in Modern & Contemporary Art, and Sam M. Gibbons Endowed Chair in Architecture and Urban Design.

If for no other reason than to satisfy a curiosity, join us Sept. 2 at 7pm in Theatre I.

    game changers
    adventurers
    challengers

Columbia Rolls Back Prices for “1905 Day”

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hi all.  Travis back with another Tampa Bay dining update.  The Columbia Restaurant is one of my favorite restaurants of all time, so I am really excited about this announcement.

On Sunday, September 19, The Columbia Restaurant rolls back the prices for “1905 Day” to celebrate the 105th ANNIVERSARY of the fourth and fifth generation family-owned business. As has been the tradition since their 75th Anniversary, the Columbia has developed a special menu with the prices of yesteryear for this day.

“1905 Day” takes place at the Columbia Restaurants in Tampa’s Ybor City, Sarasota, St. Augustine, The Pier in St. Petersburg, Sand Key on Clearwater Beach and Celebration.  All Columbia Restaurants are open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

From noon until 7:00 p.m. on “1905” Day, guests will enjoy the Columbia Restaurant’s world-famous Spanish cuisine for the prices they might have paid in the “good ole days”.

Menu items will include: Chicken & Yellow Rice “Ybor” for $2.95, Boliche (eye round of beef) for $2.95, Merluza “A la Rusa” for $2.95, Columbia’s Original “1905 Salad” for $1.95, Sangria for $.95 cents, flan for $.50 cents, and their richly brewed American coffee for $.05 cents.

But note that on this day only, reservations are not accepted, and take-out items are not available. And, also, the Columbia Café on the Riverwalk at the Tampa Bay History Center in Downtown Tampa will not offer the "1905 Day" menu, but will be open and serving from their regular menu.

So, make your plans to get out and enjoy the treats!  And we'll see you back here for more updates about great things to do in Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay area events.

Tampa Bay Fishing Update

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone.  Travis back with a Tampa Bay fishing update for you.  Yeah, I know you love to spend time on the Tampa Bay area beaches, but when you feel like getting off the sand and heading in to the water, then listen up.  Here's the latest fishing update from Capt. Stewart Ames -

Redfish become the primary inshore fishing target during the heat of summer in the Tampa Area and this August was no exception.  Water temperatures actually exceeded the ninety degree mark on several days, which had even the heat tolerant redfish moving a little slower than usual.  Fishing was best on the high and outgoing tides.

Residential docks and grass flats with good water movement appeared to be the most productive locations. As has been the case all season, most of the fish caught were of good quality.  Pinfish bobbered a half a foot off of the bottom or cut baits were most productive.  Looking  forward into September, redfishing should only get better as days get shorter and daytime temperatures start to moderate a little bit.  Schooling fish should be easier to find as well, setting the stage for double digit catch days.

Although Tampa Snook Fishing is best during May, June and early July, quality fish can still be caught in the late summer months by the persistent angler. Those interested in targeting a large specimen should night fish with big baits such as grunts and ladyfish.

The best times are during strongest tidal movement.  As is almost always the case with snook, let the baits float naturally through the snook's lair with no weight unless the current is very strong.  Likely hangouts for these larger fish include the deep cuts near local passes, jetties, and around lighted docks known to harbor big fish.  Snook are present in the same locations during the daylight hours, but  seem more reluctant to eat when the sun is high.

At some point in September, water temperatures will begin to drop. This cooler water will trigger a migration of mangrove snapper to our near shore Pinellas County Reefs in large numbers.  Last year, this fishing lasted from late September to December.  On days where the tides are weak and inshore fishing a little tougher, a trip 4 - 5 miles offshore to these reefs can be  great "Plan B".  By aggressively chumming, hundreds of snapper can be brought to the stern of your boat.

Although wary on some days, they can be hooked on every cast on others.  Free-lined shrimp or a small whitebait dropped back into the slick is the best technique for regular hookups.  Larger fish are typically found towards the back of the slick.  If this approach does not pay off, take the same bait and drop it directly to the  bottom with as little weight as is needed to hold it stationary.  Do not move the bait at all.  Just wait for a tug.  Snapper will approach a bait like this and circle it, sometimes for minutes, before they pick it up.  Once the snapper are effectively chummed up, rig a couple of heavy action spinning rods with a steel leader above the hook.

Take larger baits such as threadfin herring or big pilchards and cast these baits, on balloons, well back into the chum slick. Place these rods up above where they are out of the way and just wait.  While everyone is actively focusing on filling out their snapper limits, a drag will start screaming as a larger predator has inhaled one of these ballooned baits.  In September, this could be a Spanish mackerel, bonita, cobia, barracuda or shark...any of these providing an interesting diversion from snapper fishing.

With August in the rear view mirror, fishing will only get batter for the next few months. The best days to inshore fish during the month of September are the 5th through the 11th and the 20th through the 26th so plan your fishing trips with these dates in mind.

And there you have it.  Good luck and good fishing.  And in the meantime, keep checking back here for more things to do in Tampa Bay and other Tampa Bay area events.
