At the USF Bulls Soccer Home Finale Last Night...

Thursday, October 29, 2009 by Bay Bloggers
Yo, yo, yo! Whatsup peeps! Jerm here with a tiny re-cap last night of the USF Bulls Men's Soccer game I was at last night. It was in fact senior night last night as the USF Bulls took on the Depaul Blue Demons in Big East play last night.

I  was out at the game last night drumming up some support for the Tampa Bay FIFA World Cup Bid and getting signatures for the petition. Which by the way, if you haven't done that, then you can hop over to our website and do so. I even got to meet Thomas Rongen last night, who is head coach of the US Under 20 Men's National team

It was a difficult game for the Bulls to break open last night as the Blue Demons seemed content to keep at least 9 guys behind the ball all night and just weather the storm, but USF finally made the breakthrough on an absolute rip of a bending free kick just outside the eighteen by Zak Boggs.

I had a feeling when he stepped up to take it that he was going to make it, and I almost started to take some video of it, but told myself, nahhhhhh he's not gonna make it. As a result I will never doubt Zak Boggs again, and neither should you!

Despite a valiant defensive effort by the Blue Demons and plenty of good chances by the Bulls to get on the board again, that is the way the game would end as the Bulls took their overall record to 12-2-2, 6-2-2 in conference play. For the second year in a row, the University of South Florida men's soccer team finished its regular season home schedule without a loss..., now that's impressive!

Great Crowd at the Game Last NightThe Bulls will end the season on the road this weekend vs. a tough Rutgers team sure to be looking to knock off the #9 ranked Bulls in conference play! The following week the Bulls will try and defend their Big East Title against what will be a very tough field of opponents.

For more info on that and other Bulls soccer updates check out the Men's Soccer home page.

But that's not all guys, more soccer action for you tonight as the number 4 seeded Lady Bull's kick-off conference tournament play vs Depaul at 7:30! Coach Denise Schlite-Brown will be looking to start the postseason on a strong note after finishing the season strong with the teams best record since 03'!

Come out tonight and show your support for the Bulls and our World Cup Bid as we will be back out there collecting signatures! Who knows, the USF Athletic department may even feed you as, last night they gave a way free pizza from Papa Johns!

That's all I got for now folks, but stay tuned for more updates from Jerm on USF Tampa Bay area events and things to do in Tampa Bay!

Outside Pool/Dock ViewThe Radisson Bay Harbor Hotel in Tampa's Westshore district, after undergoing a complete renovation project, is re-emerging as the Best Western Bay Harbor Hotel. I recently had the opportunity to rediscover this hotel property, and I was very pleasantly surprised.

The 257-room Best Western sits on a piece of land that was almost the home to a new Ritz-Carlton hotel, until plans changed. Decisions were then made to renovate and re-brand the hotel into a Best Western, and after $10 million in renovations... well, you just have to see it to believe it!

Best Western King RoomEvery guest room is appointed with flat screen televisions, complimentary in-room coffee, complimentary high-speed wireless Internet and balconies with absolutely breathtaking views of the Bay. Among the other amenities that are included in your stay: a heated waterfront pool, volleyball courts, fishing pier/boat dock (with jet ski rentals!), free airport and local restaurant/shopping shuttle, business center, fitness center and last- but not least- a Crabby Bills Beach Club attached to the hotel.

You can order from Crabby's extensive seafood menu and have it delivered to your room, or you can go down to the restaurant and enjoy live music and a cocktail while watching the sun set. It doesn't get any better than that!

Tampa is the PURRRRRR-FECT Place

Thursday, May 28, 2009 by Convention Sales
Cat SunglassesOur very own city of Tampa Bay was recently named the best city in the United States for felines! CATalyst, a Kansas City-based coalition of veterinarians, cat loving academics, non-profits and industries as well as animal welfare organizations, conducted a survey of the nation's larger metropolitan areas and found that Tampa Bay topped the list for feline-friendliness.

Some factors of the survey included how many cats are in the community, the number of veterinarians and how many of those vets are feline specialists. The number of emergency veterinarian hospitals and number of feline behaviorists (cat psychologists), as well as the number of American Animal Hospital Association-accredited clinics and cat shows were also considered.

Tampa Bay beat out Phoenix, San Francisco, Portland, Denver, Boston, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta and Minneapolis for the top position on the cat-conscious list.

Just one more reason why Tampa Bay is the BEST city to visit, meet and live! Keep checking back for more tid-bits on the Bay area.

In case you havn’t heard….Tampa Bay is March Madness!

Friday, April 3, 2009 by Josh Jones

With joint efforts of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, Tampa Bay & Company, St. Pete Times Forum, University of South Florida and several other community partners, the Tampa Bay area has been able to thrive in the tourism industry over the last 24 months of NCAA March Madness.

This annual, month-long period in sports brought national attention and economic success to the Tampa Bay community through events it served host to.
Check out the resume below and see what’s in store for the future:

2007 ACC Basketball Tournament
Making its first visit ever trip to the state of Florida, the 2007 Men’s ACC Basketball Tournament was a tremendous esoteric and economic success to the Tampa Bay area.  More than 22,000 visitors emerged upon Tampa Bay to watch the North Carolina Tar Heels take home the tournament championship over the North Carolina State Wolfpack 89-80.  Several downtown restaurants reported a 75 percent increase in revenue and downtown hotels were sold out months in advance.  Numerous successful highlights were events such as "ACC FanFest", "Tournament Tailgate", "University Day", "Legends Brunch", and "Channelside Courtside Party Zone".

2008 NCAA 1st/2nd Rounds
On March 21-23, Tampa Bay welcomed back the NCAA First and Second Rounds.  The Tampa Bay community managed to be a continuous highlight for the “madness” as it hosted some of the tournament’s most exciting games and was associated with headlining nicknames such as “Tampa Turmoil” and “Upset City”.  In the first day of action Villanova upset Clemson, Siena upset Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky upset Drake, and San Diego upset Connecticut.  On the second day Villanova went on to beat Siena, and Western Kentucky defeated San Diego.

2008 Women’s Final Four
On April 6-8, for the first time in the history of the Championship, the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four came to the sunshine state.  The Tampa Bay area hosted the semifinals and finals, and crowned the University of Tennessee the National Champion.  An estimated 22,595 visitors came to the area and saw the Lady Vols take home their eighth national championship after defeating Stanford 64-48.  The event accounted for approximately 13,000 room nights and $19,114,228 million in economic impact.  Highlights of the tournament and related activities included the four team “Pep Rally in Channelside Bay Plaza”, “4Kay Run”, “Bounce by the Bay”, “Hoop City”, and the “WBCA High School All-Star game”.

2009 Men’s SEC Basketball Tournament
The exciting games, the local hospitality, and four days of beautiful weather helped to make the 2009 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament a huge success in its first trip to Florida since 1990.  SEC alumni and fans brought their passion for basketball, food, and partying.  The downtown area found itself jam-packed with those in town to watch basketball and frequent some of Tampa’s hotspots.  Fans were treated to an upset in the final game as three-seed Mississippi State defeated top-seeded Tennessee.

The future…
The success continues as Tampa will see the NCAA Women’s Final Four return in 2015.  The NCAA Women’s committee cited Tampa's successful presentation of the 2008 Women's Final Four as the key.  The event was widely praised by NCAA administrators for its organization and hospitality.  When evaluating prospective host cities, the committee reviewed each city’s competition venue, convention center, hotel community, transportation plans, legacy programs and financial commitment, as well as the community’s and prospective host institution/conference’s overall commitment to the event.

Stay tuned for more Tampa Bay Sports updates and Tampa Bay area events!

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Ok, we are taking another step back from basketball and giving you water lovers out there (and I know there are a ton of you) some Tampa Bay entertainment you won't want to miss!

We are talking about the Tampa Mayor's Cup Regatta this weekend.  Here's some info you may want -

The Tampa Mayor’s Cup Regatta is one of the preeminent early-season rowing events featuring many top crews and athletes from around the country.  The races will take place on March 14 in Downtown Tampa’s Seddon Channel between the south tip of Harbour Island north to Tampa General Hospital on Davis Islands.  Spectator areas include Tampa General Hospital Park adjacent to the new parking garage, HCC Corporate Train Center, and Majorie Park among others.
