what's Happening in Downtown Tampa This Week!

Thursday, October 15, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone!  Travis here with some great things to do in Tampa Bay.  Actually, we're talking about things to do in downtown Tampa over the next week...and believe me, there are a ton of great Tampa Bay area events!

First, the Tampa Bay Lightning are back on the ice.  Here is their home schedule for the next weeks:

Thursday, October 22nd the Lightning take on San Jose Sharks.  Game starts at 7:30 p.m.  For tickets and more information about the Tampa Bay Lightning, visit their Web site at www.tampabaylightning.com.

Next, on Thursday, October 15th, the Tampa Bay History Center invites everyone to explore the exhibition called Florida Cattle Ranching: Five Centuries of Tradition.  This is a temporary exhibit that opened last month in the Tampa Bay History Center’s new third-floor, 2,000-square-foot gallery (it's running through December). Florida Cattle Ranching chronicles the history and culture of one of Florida’s oldest industries and features oral histories, Florida folk music, cowboy art and documentary footage.  Admission ranges from $7-$12.

On Friday, October 16th, the Market days are hear again!  The Tampa Downtown Market kicks off its second season.  This year the Tampa Downtown Market will be bigger than before stretching up Franklin Street and going down Madison Street.  The Tampa Downtown Market opens at 10 a.m. and stays open until 2 p.m.  At the Market you will find fresh produce, unique hand made gifts and enjoy a great urban setting.

Then, on Saturday, October 17th, Runners take your mark…The Third Annual Spartan Challenge 5k starts at 8 a.m.  The Third Annual Spartan Challenge 5K will be held entirely on the University of Tampa campus.  The course will not be your typical 5K road race. It will include running through tires, jumping over hay bales (and maybe even a mud pit), as well as crawling under a cargo net.....all of this in and around UT's historic campus.  Sounds like a great deal of fun!

On Sunday, October 18th, relax and enjoy brunch by the water.  Café Dufrain, located at 707 Harbour Post Drive, is serving a delectable menu including mouth watering island inspired cuisine and tasty tropical beverages.  Music tops off the setting.  So, come as a couple or bring some friends to Cafe Dufrain and enjoy the urban setting.

Next Monday, October 19th, The Kotler Art Gallery at the John F. Germany Public Library is presenting Coalition of Hispanic Artists - "Southern Exposure".  Coalition of Hispanic Artists (CHA) is a not for profit organization comprised of painters, sculptors, artisans, photographers, poets, and musicians, and was founded in April 2007 and incorporated in March 2008.

On Wednesday, October 21st, The City of Tampa Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Committees' Annual Celebration is held at the Tampa Theatre starting at 11 a.m.  This event is in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The event is intended to showcase the many Hispanic contributions in Tampa. The Committee focuses on recognizing, appreciating and honoring City of Tampa's Hispanic employees while educating other ethnic groups on the Hispanic culture through cultural entertainment, food and motivational speakers.

The free event, open to the public, welcomes over 500 Tampa's citizens each year. Tedd Webb, 970 WFLA Radio personality, will emcee this year's Celebration and Mayor Pam Iorio will officially proclaim the day "Hispanic Heritage Day" in Tampa. The keynote address will be given by Patsy Feliciano, Interim Director, Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, University of South Florida. Featured entertainment includes the musical performances by Melanie Rose, a tribute to the late Maria Esther Carrillo, founder of TICH and dance performances.

Also that day, help the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute and the Downtown Tampa Attractions Association while enjoying a glass of wine.  From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at TinaTapas, located at 615 Channelside Drive inside Channelside Bay Plaza, Barefoot Wines will be flowing all in the name of support.  Each glass helps raise funds for these two worthwhile organizations.

On Tuesday, October 22nd, The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts hails the spirit of Woodstock in its first ever concert series with 60's-style music and ambience in its Flashback @ FMoPA Concert Series. Get in the groove during the after-work hours of 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursdays, October 22, 29 and November 5, 2009.  Admission is free for museum members and $5 for non-members. Danny Thro will be staging psychedelic light shows all three evenings.  Music will be provided by Ronny Elliot (Oct. 22); Rebekah Pulley (Oct. 29) and Steve Grant (Nov. 5).  Wine from Barefoot Wine and Bubbly and brownies and brie from Whole Foods Market will be available.

Drawings will be held for prizes from Sam Ash Music Stores at every concert.  Purifica: Water At Its Best and Creative Loafing are sponsors of the series with WMNF 88.5 fm Radio as media sponsor.  The concert series is being held in conjunction with the museum‘s exhibition saluting the 40th anniversary of Woodstock,  “Burk Uzzle’s Woodstock and other Americana.”  It is open through November 7.  For more details, click here.

Tampa Bay Lightning is Greased this week!!

Wednesday, August 19, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company
Greetings Tampanians!  Jessica here to fill you in on my exciting evening at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center...

As you may recall I was priviledged to witness the Opening Night of Grease the Muscial last night!  This production, based on the 1950's summer love of "Danny" & "Sandy" and their senior year at Rydell High, is a melody of classic rock and pop songs you can't help but sing along to!

(But before I continue, one correction I must make from yesterday's blog is American Idol Winner, Taylor Hicks, did not play "Danny Zuko," he appeared as the "Teen Angel"... my apologies for the mistake!)

Nonetheless, the cast was outstanding!!  As a Broadway fan myself, this production was certainly comparable in quality -- the costumes, stage set-up, performance, and of course talent were excellent!  Although the theatrical/musical production places some songs out of order from the well-known 1978 film production, need not fear because all musical favorites were still included!
Taylor Hicks, American Idol Winner, as Teen Angel in Grease the Musical
My personal favorite last night was the Hand Jive at the Rydell High Dance when WAXX Radio hosted a couples dance competition!  Between the live orchestra music and awesome choreography, this scene stole the show in my opinion....  However, the Grease Lightning scene is always a classic and this production was no exception!!

Taylor Hicks was outstanding in his role as Frenchie's Guardian Angel, singing "Beauty School Dropout."  In addition, there's a surprise at the end of the show everyone must stick around for!

The show was wonderful and the audience was fully engaged - clapping, singing, and sometimes even getting up to dance!  All of which I'm guilty... it's Grease, why not sing along!

So, if you haven't bought your tickets for this Tampa Bay entertainment event, you still have a chance.  Grease the Musical will be performed at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center tonight through Sunday at 7:30 pm.  For ticket information visit www.tbpac.org.  This is a great opportunity to enjoy a live performance and enjoy the beautiful architected Performing Arts Center in Downtown Tampa while you're there!

This Tampa Bay events got enough "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop A-wop-bam-boom" to go around!! Enjoy :)

VOTE for America's Best Public Bathroom!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 by Partner Pulse

I was amazed to learn today that there is actually a contest for the nation's best public restroom.  Really?  Is this serious?  Yes, it is and TWO of the top ten locations are Tampa Bay & Company partners...NOVA 535 and the Tampa Theatre.   I have only been in the restrooms at NOVA 535 and they are very, very nice.  There are 10 individual bathroom stalls at NOVA 535 and they are all decorated beautifully.  NOVA 535 is a great event venue, but is also a bar.  The bathrooms are large enough to fit 10 people inside so if a bunch of girls are going to the bathroom together, they can all still fit in one of the bathrooms.  I haven't seen the Tampa Theatre's restrooms, but have seen the rest of the theathre.  If they are anything compared to the theatre, then they are amazing bathrooms.

NOVA 535 and the Tampa Theatre are competing against Radio City Music Hall, the Drake Hotel in Chicago and the Venetian Resort's Zeffrino Risotrante in Vegas for this prestigious award.

Please vote for our partners at www.bestrestroom.com through July 31st!

The Results Are In...

Friday, April 10, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone...Travis here again!  We all know that the Super Bowl this past February was awesome!  And we all know that it garnered media attention from around the world (in fact, Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa broke media attendance records).  And if you didn't know, this was the most watched Super Bowl in TV history.

Well, we are going to take a minute to toot our own horn, and tell you the results of our efforts here at Tampa Bay & Company.  Here's the recap -

National television segments that Tampa Bay & Company was directly responsible for resulted in $3.9 million in equivalent advertising exposure for the Tampa area, including segments on NBC’s The Today Show; the CBS Evening News; Good Morning Arizona; and Sky Sports in the UK.  Additionally, two interviews were done with the Associated Press representing an estimated 100 media placements throughout the United States and across the globe.

As an additional component in the campaign, radio station interviews aired across the country in states including Arizona, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, California, Ohio, Maryland and Washington D.C., just to name a few.  Non-traditional/social media activities played a vital role in garnering media attention, and traffic to the Tampa Bay & Company blog site was up almost 170% for the month, as compared to the previous month.

And there's the basic recap of the Super Bowl activity from Tampa Bay & Company.

Keep checking back for more Tampa Tourism updates...plus, there are some great Tampa Bay area events coming up, so stay tuned for more information about those and other great things to do in Tampa Bay!

Chris Berman - Super Bowl XLIII eventsThat's right folks...we're talking about Chris Berman today.  Last night I had the privilege to attend the Legends for Charity Event at the Westin Harbour Island.  Now, let me tell you, as far as things to do in Tampa Bay for Super Bowl XLIII, this tops the list of Tampa Bay entertainment.

This was a night filled with honoring ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman with the Pat Summerall award for everything he has done for the community around him.  Plus, all of the proceeds raised through the live and silent auctions (which were a ton of fun) and through ticket sales were donated to St. Jude Children's Hospital!

There were other celebs there too - it was hosted by Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic, radio hosts of ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning.  it also featured guest speakers Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly and ESPN's Tom Jackson.

By the end of the night, we were all very excited to be part of this event.  But, the events continue tonight and if you are looking to get involved, check out some of our other blogs and even our twitter, www.VisitTampaBay.com/twitter, and facebook, www.VisitTampaBay.com/facebook, pages.

And, make sure you stop back by and let us know if you went to any of these cool events and how it was.

Until next time...keep, going, all, the, way!!!!!!!!

Super Bowl Brings SUPER Events...

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 by Convention Sales
If you've ever lived through a hometown Super Bowl, you probably know how many exciting events come along with the biggest sporting event in the country. This is my second Tampa Bay Super Bowl experience, but when it came here in 2001, I was not of the legal drinking age, so I wasn't as interested in all of the events as I am now.

I wanted to write this blog post to show you examples of some of the events that are going on this week here in the Bay area:

Wednesday, January 28th
Super Hyde Park Music Series
Take in a live music performance by country music star, Jason Young, and a festive atmosphere at this open-air concert in the heart of Hyde Park Village, one of Tampa's most breathtaking neighborhoods. I definitely have this event marked on my calendar, since it's also free and open to the public. Visit this Web site for more information.

Thursday, January 29th
Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Bash
Smash into Super Bowl weekend at one of the hottest concerts in the Tampa Bay area, featuring celebrity hosts, appearances by a few of the NFL's biggest names and most importantly, a concert featuring Rihanna, Fall Out Boy and Lifehouse. This event will be broadcast live on VH1 and tickets are between $20 and $45. Click here for more event and ticket information.

blu Kick-Off Event
Enjoy a star-studded evening of lavish entertainment, celebrity apprearances and tasty tapas, in the celebration of the unveiling of blu, the Bay area's ultimate luxury lifestyle magazine. This event will take place at The Florida Aquarium, located in downtown Tampa. A portion of ticket sales will benefit America's Second Harvest of Tampa Bay and the Florida Aquarium. Presale tickets cost $175. Visit www.blutampabay.com for more information.

Friday, January 30th
Bud Bowl 2009
This two-night block party (Friday and Saturday) will take place in the Channelside Bay Plaza in downtown Tampa and is for adult consumers 21 and older. Snoop Dogg will perform on Jan. 30 and 3 Doors Down will take the stage on Jan. 31. Tickets for this event can be obtained through Budweiser promotions in area bars, clubs and restaurants and through Clear Channel radio station giveaways. Visit www.anheuser-busch.com for more information.

Saturday, January 31st
DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl
Cheer on NFL Hall of Famers and Hollywood celebrities as they compete in an old-school grudge match game of flag football then enjoy a post-game concert featuring LL Cool J! This event will take place at Progress Energy Park in St. Petersburg and is free and open to the public. Visit www.directv.com for more information.

And then of course, Sunday, February 1st is the BIG DAY!!! Kick-off starts around 6:30 p.m., and as long as I am alive after four long days of Super Bowl events, I will be watching the big game from one of my favorite local hot spots. Or I might be stuck to my couch, completely exhausted and not able to move. Either way, what an exciting week we have ahead of us! I hope you are all able to join in on some of the festivities!

Make sure to check out our new Super Bowl page at www.VisitTampaBay.com/SuperBowl. These are only a few of the events going on, there are so many more that I could never fit into one post. Check them all out and see which events catch your eye. Thanks for stopping by and have a fantastic Super Bowl week!

Why is the number 4,500 significant to Tampa this week...?

Monday, January 26, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company
Hey everyone! Obviously the Super Bowl receives a ton of media attention, right?! Well, Super Bowl XVIII in Tampa Bay has set a record! More than 4,500 credentialed media personnel will arrive in Tampa throughout the week to cover the most highly anticipated sporting event of the year! This will mark the second largest media attendance for any Super Bowl in NFL history. Additionally, this year's Super Bowl and the Tampa Bay area have attracted more than 630 media outlets from 28 countries, both Super Bowl records!

I had a chance to stop by the media center this afternoon. It was so neat! As I walked through "Radio Row," I saw some pretty important interviews going on and some pretty important people. But, it's only Monday! As the week continues, it's going to get more crowded and Tampa is going to be receiving recognition all around the world!

Hosting a Super Bowl brings a lot of fun and excitement to a destination. Tampa is thrilled to be hosting the 43rd Super Bowl and is ready to welcome 4,500 members of the media, and many fans and visitors from all across the globe! All ears and eyes are upon us here in Tampa Bay! What an exciting time!

Happy Super Bowl week everyone!

~Cheers!

Bud Bowl Blasts Off for the Super Bowl XLIII

Thursday, January 22, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey there sports fans!  Here's another Tampa Bay Area Events update for Super Bowl XLIII!  Now, I know we always bring you the best Tampa Bay Entertainment, but as far as things to do in Tampa Bay, listen up!

Bud Bowl 2009 - Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa BayThe world-famous Bud Bowl will be hitting Tampa soon, and here are the details -

While Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were leading the San Francisco 49ers to victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in pro football’s big game in 1989, Bud Bowl was making headlines in the very first television commercials featuring a “battle of bottles”  between Budweiser and Bud Light.

Anheuser-Busch and its local beer distributors of the Tampa Bay area are hosting Bud Bowl 2009, Jan. 30 – 31, in advance of the professional football championship.  While a number of gridiron parties will take place in Tampa and elsewhere, the marquee Bud Bowl block party will be one of the hottest tickets in town.

Bud Bowl will include the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales, Bud Light MXT and free live concerts at Channelside.   Snoop Dogg and 3 Doors Down will entertain Bud Bowl fans on Jan. 30 and 31, respectively.

On Jan. 30 and 31, Budweiser and Bud Light will stage two of the area’s must-see “One Night Stand” concerts at Channelside, featuring Snoop Dogg and 3 Doors Down.  To attend the concerts, adult consumers 21 and older must have invitations, which can be obtained through Budweiser promotions in area bars, clubs and restaurants and through radio station giveaways.  There will be no tickets or invitations available to the block parties on those evenings.  Gates will open each evening at 8 p.m.

Although football is undoubtedly the focus of the week, fans will have an opportunity to view the Bud Light MXT mobile unit at a number of locations.  The Bud Light MXT is armed with satellite TV, DVD and Xbox 360 state-of-the-art capabilities to allow guests to watch their favorite team on a high-definition big screen television, or challenge their friends to a popular video game.

Ok, that is just a piece of the puzzle as far as Bud Bowl is concerned, but make sure you log on to www.anheuser-busch.com to get the full scoop!  So be sure to get the details and make this part of your Tampa BAy tour for Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa!

Until next time, keep checking back for more updates on the best Tampa Bay entertainment throughout Super Bowl XLIII.
