Thursday, October 29, 2009 by Bay Bloggers
athleticsyck again with another Tampa Bay Sports update! THIS IS SPARTA!!! Pardon me, as I was channeling King Leonidis and my inner Spartan there for a moment.

Image Courtesy of Uinversity of Tamp aAthletics.Tonight the University of Tampa Men's Soccer team will take on St. Leo as they look tclosese out the regular season in style before defending their Sunshine State Conference title!

The Spartans have been ranked in the top 10 in each of the regular season polls this year, including three weeks at number one and will also  look to continue their 16 game home win streak that dates back to 2007 against this same St. Leo Lions team.

The Spartans will also honor a veteran group as tonight will be the final home game for a group of seniors that will be greatly missed come next year.

The Spartans are led by senior and top goal scorer Pascal Milien, who has tallied 10 goals to go along with three assists for 23 points. In goal for the Spartans is fellow senior Ryan Thompson who boasts an 11-1-1 record with three shutouts and a 0.89 goals against average. Kyle Williams will lead back-linene that has allowed just 12 goals on the year so far.

At the USF Bulls Soccer Home Finale Last Night...

Thursday, October 29, 2009 by Bay Bloggers
Yo, yo, yo! Whatsup peeps! Jerm here with a tiny re-cap last night of the USF Bulls Men's Soccer game I was at last night. It was in fact senior night last night as the USF Bulls took on the Depaul Blue Demons in Big East play last night.

I  was out at the game last night drumming up some support for the Tampa Bay FIFA World Cup Bid and getting signatures for the petition. Which by the way, if you haven't done that, then you can hop over to our website and do so. I even got to meet Thomas Rongen last night, who is head coach of the US Under 20 Men's National team

It was a difficult game for the Bulls to break open last night as the Blue Demons seemed content to keep at least 9 guys behind the ball all night and just weather the storm, but USF finally made the breakthrough on an absolute rip of a bending free kick just outside the eighteen by Zak Boggs.

I had a feeling when he stepped up to take it that he was going to make it, and I almost started to take some video of it, but told myself, nahhhhhh he's not gonna make it. As a result I will never doubt Zak Boggs again, and neither should you!

Despite a valiant defensive effort by the Blue Demons and plenty of good chances by the Bulls to get on the board again, that is the way the game would end as the Bulls took their overall record to 12-2-2, 6-2-2 in conference play. For the second year in a row, the University of South Florida men's soccer team finished its regular season home schedule without a loss..., now that's impressive!

Great Crowd at the Game Last NightThe Bulls will end the season on the road this weekend vs. a tough Rutgers team sure to be looking to knock off the #9 ranked Bulls in conference play! The following week the Bulls will try and defend their Big East Title against what will be a very tough field of opponents.

For more info on that and other Bulls soccer updates check out the Men's Soccer home page.

But that's not all guys, more soccer action for you tonight as the number 4 seeded Lady Bull's kick-off conference tournament play vs Depaul at 7:30! Coach Denise Schlite-Brown will be looking to start the postseason on a strong note after finishing the season strong with the teams best record since 03'!

Come out tonight and show your support for the Bulls and our World Cup Bid as we will be back out there collecting signatures! Who knows, the USF Athletic department may even feed you as, last night they gave a way free pizza from Papa Johns!

That's all I got for now folks, but stay tuned for more updates from Jerm on USF Tampa Bay area events and things to do in Tampa Bay!

POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS SET TO RAISE THE BAR IN 2010

Monday, October 26, 2009 by Josh Jones
Josh Jones here guys, and I have some info on one of the cooler Tampa Bay area events coming to town! The Raw Unity Power-lifting Championships are set to take place in Tampa Bay for the third straight year.

Raw Unity is the perfect excuse to bring the best raw power-lifters in the state to compete using only their “raw” talent. The competition will take place on January 30Th and 31st, 2010 in the George W. Jenkins Family Center of the Jackson Springs Recreation Center.

For those of you who don’t know about Raw Unity or power-lifting, allow me to inform you.  Power-lifting began in the late 1960s. Raw power-lifting started it journey with minor leagues being formed in the early to mid 90s. Raw power-lifting is another form of power-lifting; however, this form is how much a participant can lift without their squat suit. The purpose behind the whole concept is to test an athlete’s real raw lifting ability. Raw power-lifting covers three events: squat, bench press and dead lift.

Last year the championship was able to bring over 50 participants and over 250 show attendees to the big show. This year they expect over 100 participants and over 350 show attendees. All the proceeds from the meet will go to fund the Jackson Springs Recreation Center after-school athletic programs and scholarship funds.

Last year’s event sold out, so be sure to get there early to get your seats!

From more information: www.rawunitymeet.com. This is Josh Jones signing off now, and be sure to follow my posts for more updates from your Tampa Bay team on the amateur Tampa Bay Sports scene here in Tampa Bay!

COMPETITION SCHEDULE:
Saturday, January 30Th - Women and Lightweights (under 180lbs) compete
Sunday, January 31st – Men 180 lbs and up compete

Downtown Tampa events

Friday, October 23, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey gang!  Travis back with more great Tampa Bay area events, taking place in downtown Tampa!!!!  So, let's get to it:

Tonight, start your engines.  The 2010 Model Tampa Bay International Auto Show races to the Tampa Convention Center.  If you are in the market for a new car, this is a must do before you go to the dealership.

tomorrow, October 24th, the popular Student Dance Happening will take place inside and out at The University of Tampa Oct. 21-24 at 8 p.m. A crowd favorite at UT, the Dance Happening will begin at the David Falk Theatre. The opening portion of the free program will take place inside the Falk Theatre, and the remainder will take place on the Plant Hall East Verandah.

UT graduate Susannah LeMarquand ’01 is the Dance Happening coordinator this year. She has worked on cruise ships and is now working at Busch Gardens while teaching as an adjunct instructor at UT.  Presented by the Department of Speech, Theatre, and Dance, the Student Dance Happening features popular music and the work of talented students from all sectors of the University community. Choreography features new work by 21 UT students and alumni. The UT Dance Team and the Black Student Union Dance Team also will perform. Dance styles will include hip hop, modern, tap, lyrical and jazz, with more than 80 students participating.  The UT Dance Happening offers something for everyone. Don’t miss this unique “traveling” dance performance. The event is free!!!

Also, the Lightning take on the Buffalo Sabres.  Game starts at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more information about the Tampa Bay Lightning, visit their Web site at www.tampabaylightning.com.

Then, on Sunday, October 25th, Get ready for Halloween with friends: new, old, and dead. Historian/actor Maureen Patrick is the guide for an often shocking, frequently hilarious hour-long tour of Oaklawn Cemetery (founded 1850) where pioneer Tampa's well-to-do and ne’er-do-well lie side by side. The graveyard is the final resting place of pirates, slaves, Indian fighters, 13 City mayors, veterans of seven wars, and victims of five yellow fever epidemics. Elegant statuary, moss-hung oaks, and winding brick pathways give Oaklawn a Gothic feel, while tombstone epitaphs range from the genteel to the ridiculous. Patrick will appear in elaborate nineteenth century mourning attire, in the character of Miss Prudence Fipwhistle (born 1855, died 1899.) A $5 donation is requested at the end of the tour and benefits Tampa Historical Society, a not-for-profit organization.

On Monday, October 26th, Make your way to Café Dufrain to celebrate at Corkage Free Monday Nights.  Bring your own bottle of wine and the staff of Café Dufrain will uncork it for you.  Enjoy fine dining while taking in the water views from the outside patio.  Watch the skyline of downtown Tampa turn from day to night. Gaze at passing boats all while relaxing Monday night away.

Finally, on Tuesday, October 27, we are saying Happy Birthday to Mr. Plant!  Henry Plant would be having his 190th birthday. The HB Plant Museum thinks that's cause to celebrate and they hope you will join them!  What is a birthday without balloons, cupcakes and punch? They await you on the veranda, from noon - 2:00pm. All day Museum admission is complimentary and visitors will be given a 10% discount in the Museum Store.  In 1891, Henry Plant opened the most astonishingly magnificent Hotel of its day and it is still relevant as an iconic symbol of Tampa. Take a break from your busy schedule on October 27th, enjoy a cupcake on the veranda overlooking downtown, and stop in the Museum for a Victorian step-back-in-time moment. Happy Birthday Henry Plant!

Now, how's that for some cool Tampa Bay area events??!!  Make sure you get out and experience as many as you can.

we'll see you here next time as we continue to bring you great things to do in Tampa Bay!
