Volunteer of the Year is Crowned!

Friday, October 30, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone!  Travis here with some cool Tampa tourism information.  We dont' usually post information like this, but because these are such important people to what we do at Tampa Bay & Company, we had to tell everyone!

We honored our Volunteer of the Year yesterday at the 13th Annual Tampa Bay & Company Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, which was held at The Florida Aquarium.  This year, volunteer Loretta Cunningham was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Quotes from the VIC Manager:
Visitor Information Center Manager Natalie Bryant stated during the luncheon that this year’s winner has an excellent knowledge of the area and always offers valuable suggestions so visitors get the best experience possible during their time in the Tampa Bay area.  “Loretta has all the qualities you seek in a volunteer, and it is in her very core and personal makeup to think how they can offer help to others.”

“She goes above and beyond the monthly hours requested of Tampa Bay & Company volunteers and participates in the Visitor Information Center on a weekly basis,” said Bryant.  “However, it is not the quantity of hours that makes our winner so special but the quality of service provided each and every time she participates.”

So, congrats Loretta and thank you for everything you do.

Ok, now that taht's done, we can go back to talking about Tampa Bay entertainment.  So, keep checking back for more great things to do in Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay History Center Building Gets New Name

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone!  Travis here with a Tampa tourism update.  This is breaking news in from the county, so listen up!

In today’s regular Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the motion carried 7-0 to rename the Tampa Bay History Center building the 'J. Thomas Touchton Tampa Bay History Center.'

The renaming of the building was brought forward by Commissioner Rose Ferlita to honor the dedication and drive Touchton demonstrated to make the new facility a reality. Touchton, the founding chairperson, spent 20 years actively raising both endowment and capital funds for the History Center project.

Plus, the Touchtons are in the process of donating their historic map collection of more than 3,000 items to the History Center. These maps and charts represent some of the “Florida” map-makers visions that have been created over the past 400 years.

The Tampa Bay History Center is located at 801 Old Water Street in the Channelside District, and serves as the County's official repository for historic artifacts. With a total cost of $52 million, $17 million provided by the County, the History Center includes 25,000 square feet of exhibit areas, featuring 12,000 years of local history, interactive displays and multiple theaters, plus a gallery that features temporary exhibits.

In addition, a research library is staffed by the Hillsborough County Library system. The Columbia Restaurant operates the Columbia Cafe, complete with a replica of the original Columbia Restaurant bar in Ybor City, founded in 1905.

If you want to learn more about the Tampa Bay History Center, visit www.tampabayhistorycenter.org.

Westin Tampa Bay receives 4 Diamonds

Friday, October 16, 2009 by Tampa Bay & Company

Hey everyone!  Travis back with some cool Tampa tourism news!  We are excited to help spread the word that the Westin Tampa Bay has been awarded the Four Diamond Rating from AAA!!!!!!

Here's the scoop -
Open less than six months, the Westin Tampa Bay, has been awarded the prestigious Four Diamond Award from the American Automobile Association (AAA) for 2009.  The Westin Tampa Bay is part of a select group of AAA Four Diamond Award winners throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Four Diamond hotels represent just 3.4 percent of the more than 58,000 AAA diamond rated lodgings and 2.8 percent of the nearly 27,000 AAA rated restaurants.  It is the only Westin to receive this award in the Tampa Bay region.

To be considered for a diamond rating, hotels must undergo a rigorous evaluation process, including an unannounced visit from one of AAA’s 65 full-time and highly trained professional evaluators. Once a property has been approved, AAA then assigns a diamond rating, from one to five diamonds, to each approved hotel depending on the level of service, décor, and amenities.

Now how cool is that...let's hear it for the Westin Tampa Bay...thanks for representing Tampa the way you do!  and for those of you who want to see and experience what the fuss is all about, you can make reservations and get more information at www.westin.com/tampabay

See everyone back here again later...and keep checking back for more information about great things to do in Tampa Bay, as well as other Tampa tourism info.

Okay here goes:
  1. The Florida Aquarium Center for Conservation has three divisions. Name them.
  2. Sharks are very sensitive to capture and handling stress.  This is partly due to a shark's low capacity for aerobic metabolism under duress.  When stressed, sharks quickly switch to anaerobic metabolism, building up an excess of of this type of acid?
Okay so if that one doesn't stump you then I don't know what will. Remember if you have won within the last 30 days then you are not eligible to win this go round, but are welcome to guess the answer.

Mermaids at the Florida Aquarium Trivia Giveaway!

Thursday, September 24, 2009 by jeremy fairley
Hello all Jerm here with an unexpected yet awesome trivia giveaway opportunity for you guys! Our friends over at the Florida Aquarium are having a super cool event this weekend as they host the World Famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids.

The world famous mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida, known for their grace and beauty for the past 63 years, will be performing at The Florida Aquarium in Tampa, FL for 6 shows, September 25th - 27th , 2009. This event will mark the first performance by the Weeki Wachee Mermaids in the state of Florida outside their domain of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

And guess who has tickets to giveaway? Yup that's right Jerm does!

Here are the rules again, just in case you forgot...1 - You have to be following us on Twitter.com (www.VisitTampaBay.com/Twitter); 2- Answer the question about these Weeki Wachee Mermaids  3 - You have to re-tweet the original tweet in order to be eligible to win (a lot of people forget this one, so make sure you re-tweet separately); and 4 - You have to answer the question(s) on Twitter and be the first to do so. Pretty simple huh!

Okay here goes guys...
  1. Name the three Weeki Wachee Mermaids that will be performing at this event at the Florida aquarium.
  2. When did the original Weeki Wachee Springs underwater theater open?
Okay there you have it! Get to answering! I have a 4-pack of tickets for this and its a one shot deal this time, so no chance to win for tomorrow! If you have won something from us within the last 30 days, you are going to have to sit this trivia out though...sorry, but I have to do that every now and then.

As always stay tuned in for Jerm's updates on things to do in Tampa Bay from me and the gang over here.
